From a Peterson skeptic
January 23, 2018
I read this book on recommendation from my sister, who borderline forced me to read it. Wasn't expecting much from it as I have been reading a lot of self help books recently to little avail, and was also not fond of the impression I had of Jordan Peterson from news articles I'd see about him.
To my surprise, when I started reading it, I could not put it down. I've never rarely been so fully immersed in a book. At many times while reading I became tearful and emotional. It felt almost as if Peterson was writing to me, personally. I have not been in the best place for awhile after suffering several major defeats in life and, even though I've never met the author, while reading his book I felt very understood as a person. I imagine many others will feel the same way.
I have been atheist/agnostic my whole life (and still am), but this book made me seriously question my discounting of the old and new testament as works that can be disregarded for the fact that they are blatantly and obviously unscientific. Peterson's convinced me that the bible is primarily a literary work whose function has always be to provide lessons about how to live a meaningful and dutiful life. It is the distillation of thousands of years of human knowledge to achieve this end. Further, the way he weaves in the ideas of Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, and Jung - and their own attempts to reconcile religion with rationality, with findings in more recent psychological research in animal behavior, neuroscience and cognition, is unparalleled.
This book is beyond any other self help book I've read. Most I've read in the past have made me feel good and falsely optimistic - whereas this book had me quite terrified at many points. I have been seeing and interpreting almost everything wrong when trying to deal with the problems at the most fundamental level of my being. The only way out is through.
Highly recommended to those who's life is in a rut and have developed deep and persistent sense of hopelessness. It will shake you.
